Abiotic effects on the cover and richness of corticolous lichens on Araucaria angustifolia trunks Acta Botanica
Nunes,Lucas; Burle,Giulia; Gumboski,Emerson Luiz; Dechoum,Michele.
ABSTRACT Lichens play a key role in natural ecosystems, as they can function as primary producers, recycle minerals and fix nitrogen. Despite their environmental importance, little is known about lichen ecology in Brazil, and especially about how abiotic factors may influence their spatial distribution. In this study, we aimed to verify how the cover and richness of corticolous lichens on Araucaria angustifolia trunks vary between two different habitats (Forest and Grassland). The photoquadrat sampling method was applied to A. angustifolia trunks. The Coral Point Count software with Excel extensions (CPCe) was used to analyze photographs for lichen cover and richness. Additionally, a redundancy analysis was conducted to estimate how five abiotic and two...

Adaptations of lichens to conditions in tropical forests of South-East Asia and their taxonomic implications Naturalis
Wolseley, P.A.; Hawksworth, D.L..
Lichens are fungi with a specialized nutritional mode involving algae, or cyanobacteria, or both. Classification is based on the fungal partner, and around 13 500 species are known. The association is ancient, and the first ascomycete fungi with fruit bodies may have been lichenized. Adaptations to tropical habitats include extensive utilization of trentepohlioid algae, the production of large multi-celled spores capable of forming numerous germ tubes, and water-repellant hydophobins coating internal cell walls. Many tropical groups lack modern monographs and numerous new species are discovered in detailed studies. Lichens merit more attention in the tropics as bioindicators of habitat disturbance.

Asperisporium and Pantospora (Mycosphaerellaceae): epitypifications and phylogenetic placement Naturalis
Minnis, A.M.; Kennedy, A.H.; Grenier, D.B.; Rehner, S.A.; Bischoff, J.F..
The species-rich family Mycosphaerellaceae contains considerable morphological diversity and includes numerous anamorphic genera, many of which are economically important plant pathogens. Recent revisions and phylogenetic research have resulted in taxonomic instability. Ameliorating this problem requires phylogenetic placement of type species of key genera. We present an examination of the type species of the anamorphic Asperisporium and Pantospora. Cultures isolated from recent port interceptions were studied and described, and morphological studies were made of historical and new herbarium specimens. DNA sequence data from the ITS region and n LSU were generated from these type species, analysed phylogenetically, placed into an evolutionary context...

Diversity of mycobiota in colonies of different species of leaf-cutting ants and sampling sites across Argentina Ecología austral
Marfetan,Jorge A; Folgarait,Patricia J.
Attine ants are a monophyletic group comprising more than 230 species, distributed exclusively in the New World. All higher Attini ants depend on the cultivation of fungus gardens for food, and those gardens are continuously exposed to alien microorganisms. The present work describes, for the first time, the composition, relative frequency and the richness of the fungal species comprising the mycobiota from the garden of the most abundant Acromyrmex species from different regions of Argentina. We also compared, using a multivariate approach, the mycobiota composition with the purpose of testing two hypotheses: 1) whether mycobiota is defined by the ant species, or 2) whether mycobiota is determined by the geographical region. We found that each fungal...

Endophytic Fungi as Novel Resources of natural Therapeutics BABT
Rajamanikyam,Maheshwari; Vadlapudi,Varahalarao; amanchy,Ramars; Upadhyayula,Suryanarayana Murty.
ABSTRACT Fungal endophytes constitute a major part of the unexplored fungal diversity. Endophytic fungi (EF) are an important source for novel, potential and active metabolites. Plant-endophyte interaction and endophyte -endophyte interactions study provide insights into mutualism and metabolite production by fungi. Bioactive compounds produced by endophytes main function are helping the host plants to resist external biotic and abiotic stress, which benefit the host survival in return. These organisms mainly consist of members of the Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, Zygomycota and Oomycota. Recently, the genome sequencing technology has emerged as one of the most efficient tools that can provide whole information of a genome in a small period of time....

Families and genera of diaporthalean fungi associated with canker and dieback of tree hosts Naturalis
Fan, X.L.; Bezerra, J.D.P.; Tian, C.M.; Crous, P.W..
In this study we accept 25 families in Diaporthales based on phylogenetic analyses using partial ITS, LSU, rpb2 and tef1-α gene sequences. Four different families associated with canker and dieback of tree hosts are morphologically treated and phylogenetically compared. These include three new families (Diaporthostomataceae, Pseudomelanconidaceae, Synnemasporellaceae), and one new genus, Dendrostoma (Erythrogloeaceae). Dendrostoma is newly described from Malus spectabilis, Osmanthus fragrans and Quercus acutissima having fusoid to cylindrical, bicellular ascospores, with three new species namely D. mali, D. osmanthi and D. quercinum. Diaporthostomataceae is characterised by conical and discrete perithecia with bicellular, fusoid ascospores on branches of...

Generic circumscriptions in Geoglossomycetes Naturalis
Hustad, V.P.; Miller, A.N.; Dentinger, B.T.M.; Cannon, P.F..
The class Geoglossomycetes is a recently created class of Ascomycota, currently comprised of one family (Geoglossaceae) and five genera (Geoglossum, Nothomitra, Sarcoleotia, Thuemenidium and Trichoglossum). These fungi, commonly known as earth tongues, have long been a subject of mycological research. However, the taxonomy within the group has historically been hindered by the lack of reliable morphological characters, uncertain ecological associations, and the inability to grow these fungi in culture. The phylogenetic relationships of Geoglossomycetes were investigated by conducting maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses using a 4-gene dataset (ITS, LSU, MCM7, RPB1). Five well-supported monophyletic clades were found that did not correspond exactly with...

Juglanconis gen. nov. on Juglandaceae, and the new family Juglanconidaceae (Diaporthales) Naturalis
Voglmayr, H.; Castlebury, L.A.; Jaklitsch, W.M..
Molecular phylogenetic analyses of ITS-LSU rDNA sequence data demonstrate that Melanconis species occurring on Juglandaceae are phylogenetically distinct from Melanconis s.str., and therefore the new genus Juglanconis is described. Morphologically, the genus Juglanconis differs from Melanconis by light to dark brown conidia with irregular verrucae on the inner surface of the conidial wall, while in Melanconis s.str. they are smooth. Juglanconis forms a separate clade not affiliated with a described family of Diaporthales, and the family Juglanconidaceae is introduced to accommodate it. Data of macro- and microscopic morphology and phylogenetic multilocus analyses of partial nuSSU-ITS-LSU rDNA, cal, his, ms204, rpb1, rpb2, tef1 and tub2 sequences revealed...

New primers for promising single-copy genes in fungal phylogenetics and systematics Naturalis
Schmitt, I.; Crespo, A.; Divakar, P.K.; Fankhauser, J.D.; Herman-Sackett, E.; Kalb, K.; Nelsen, M.P.; Nelson, N.A.; Rivas-Plata, E.; Shimp, A.D.; Widhelm, T.; Lumbsch, H.T..
Developing powerful phylogenetic markers is a key concern in fungal phylogenetics. Here we report degenerate primers that amplify the single-copy genes Mcm7 (MS456) and Tsr1 (MS277) across a wide range of Pezizomycotina (Ascomycota). Phylogenetic analyses of 59 taxa belonging to the Eurotiomycetes, Lecanoromycetes, Leotiomycetes, Lichinomycetes and Sordariomycetes, indicate the utility of these loci for fungal phylogenetics at taxonomic levels ranging from genus to class. We also tested the new primers in silico using sequences of Saccharomycotina, Taphrinomycotina and Basidiomycota to predict their potential of amplifying widely across the Fungi. The analyses suggest that the new primers will need no, or only minor sequence modifications to amplify...
